Kinematical description of the spontaneous imbibition processes

چکیده
A set of experiments of spontaneous imbibition for water displacing oil or a mixture of water and glycerine displacing oil, on flat and rectangular Hele-Shaw cells, is reported. Visualization of the imbibition process allowed the knowledge of the evolution of three basic kinematical variables: the active oil area, the interfacial length and the mean velocity of displacement. A derived kinematical variable, the active area equivalent length, is shown to be well suited for the kinematical description of spontaneous imbibition processes, since its normalized values become lumped to a narrow experimental band when two time scales are defined and used, looking for a self-similar behavior. The dimensionless active area equivalent length is found to be lumped to a narrow time gap, for a potential function with two time scales. This function is found to be appropriate for further description by a fractal approach. Key–Words: Spontaneous imbibition, Hele-Shaw cells, Oil recovery, Interfacial tension, Sweep efficiency.

Application of Homotopy Perturbation Method to Nonlinear Equations Describing Cocurrent and Countercurrent Imbibition in Fractured Porous Media
In oil industry, spontaneous imbibition is an important phenomenon in recovery from fractured reservoirs which can be defined as spontaneous uptake of a wetting fluid into a porous solid. Spontaneous imbibition involves both cocurrent and countercurrent flows. When a matrix block is partially covered by water, oil recovery is dominated by cocurrent imbibition i.e. the production of non wettin...
متن کاملRecovery of Oil in Limestone with Cationic Surfactant: Investigation of the Adsorption, Wettability, and Spontaneous Imbibition
The performance of petroleum recovery methods is dependent on the characteristics of the reservoir rock, oil quality, and formation water. One fundamental feature for considering petroleum recovery methods is the wettability of the rock reservoir. Also, this feature impacts the displacement of fluids in the rock reservior. In the case of the limestone, which normally features oil wettability, e...
متن کاملAn Efficient Method for Determining Capillary Pressure and Relative Permeability Curves from Spontaneous Imbibition Data
In this paper, a very efficient method, called single matrix block analyzer (SMBA), has been developed to determine relative permeability and capillary pressure curves from spontaneous imbibition (SI) data. SMBA mimics realistically the SI tests by appropriate boundary conditions modeling. In the proposed method, a cuboid with an identical core plug height is considered. The equal dimensions of...
متن کاملAn Analytical Solution for One-dimensional Horizontal Imbibition in a Cocurrent Flow
Cocurrent spontaneous imbibition (COCSI) of an aqueous phase into matrix blocks arising from capillary forces is an important mechanism for petroleum recovery from fractured petroleum reservoirs. In this work, the modeling of countercurrent imbibition is used to develop the appropriate scaling equations. Considering the imbibition process and the water and oil movement respectively as the wet p...
متن کاملCriteria for Applying the Lucas-Washburn Law
Spontaneous imbibition happens in many natural and chemical engineering processes in which the mean advancing front usually follows Lucas-Washburn's law. However it has been found that the scaling law does not apply in many cases. There have been few criteria to determine under what conditions the Washburn law works. The effect of gravity on spontaneous imbibition in porous media was investigat...
